Wagenknecht announces new German political party

Prominent German parliamentarian Sahra Wagenknecht has announced she is setting up an association in preparation for the founding of a new political party. Prominent progressive politician Sahra Wagenknecht has announced a new political party in Germany, aiming to run in the three eastern German state elections in 2025. The new party will be established at the start of the year, following a break from her previous party, Die Linke (The Left), which saw 10 of its 38 members of parliament leave. Several members of Die Lince, including current co-chair Amira Mohamed Ali, have joined the alliance. A survey suggests a potential party could be the strongest force in Thuringia, especially at the expense of the anti-immigration populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) and DieLinke.

Prominent progressive politician Sahra Wagenknecht aims to run in the three eastern German state elections next year with her new party, which she plans to found at the start of 2024.

"We are aiming to run in the three federal states but whether we actually make it in all three will of course depend on how the state associations are set up by then, which candidates we have on the ground," the 54-year-old said in Berlin on Monday.

She stressed that the decision ultimately lies with the new party.

Wagenknecht on Monday announced the set-up of an association in preparation for the founding of a new party - marking a definitive break with her previous party, the hardline progressive Die Linke (The Left).

The leader of Die Link parliamentary group, Dietmar Bartsch, confirmed on Monday that 10 of its 38 members of parliament have left the party.

Several members of Die Linke, including current co-chair Amira Mohamed Ali, have joined Wagenknecht's alliance.

Next year, state parliaments are due to be elected in the former east German states of Thuringia, Saxony and Brandenburg.

According to an Insa survey conducted in July, a Wagenknecht party would have the potential to become the strongest force in Thuringia - especially at the expense of the anti-immigration populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) and Die Linke.
